Gamblefree Day 2011

Lots of activities and events took place around the country for Gamblefree Day 2011.

Auckland

Over 300 people visited the 'Waka on the Waitemata' day held at Okahu Bay. There was waka ama experiences, activities, workshops, stalls, and competitions. Hosted by Hapai te Hauora Tapui Maori Public Health, the Problem Gambling Foundation of NZ (PGF) and the Salvation Army Oasis Centre, the event provided an opportunity to promote culturally inspired alternatives to gambling to young people.

Big Cig married pokie machine at SkyCity on Gamblefree Day

Auckland's SkyCity Casino was the venue for a different sort of wedding on Gamblefree Day.

Big Cigarette married a pokie machine in a street theatre event outside the Casino. ASH and PGF teamed up to protest against SkyCity's planned 'outdoor' balcony that will allow gamblers to simultaneously smoke and play pokies.

Mapu Maia children's poem competition

The prize giving was held at the Papatoetoe Town Hall, Auckland hosted by Mapu Maia - PGF's Pacific unit - and Radio Samoa.

Asian Family Services Slogan competition

Asian Family Services at the Problem Gambling Foundation held a Gamblefree Day slogan competition in five languages.  Auckland Councillor Richard Northey presented the awards at a ceremony held on Sunday 11 September at Chinatown, Ti Rakau Drive, Manukau. Click here for more information about the competition: English  Chinese  Korean   Thai   Vietnamese

Wellington

A street stall was held at Cuba Mall on Gamblefree Day. The PGF team provided information about problem gambling along with a team of Asian volunteers who provided information for the Asian community in different languages.

Hamilton

Garden Place was buzzing with activity with street theatre, speeches and stalls - an event hosted by Poverty Action Waikato and PGF.

Christchurch

Captain Stomper made an appearance at the Gamblefree Day event held on Saturday 3 September in Christchurch at the St Albans Baptist Church. The event focussed on health, wellbeing and fun with free entertainment, food and arts and crafts for local children.

Dunedin

An ethical funding forum was held in Dunedin at the Dunedin Art Gallery.  Speakers Peter Adams (Auckland University), Major Robert Ross (Salvation Army), and Sue Russell (DCOSS) held a discussion about alternatives to pokie funding that are ethical and sustainable.
